Akash Ganga aka The Milky Way

 


Hindu lore holds that Lord Shiva gave a place to river Ganga in his jata (जटा; locked hairs) from where it flows down to become the life-sustaining force she is even today. In the above painting (water-color), we reimagine the traditional image of a meditating Lord Shiva with the Akash Ganga (आकाशगंगा; Milky Way) Galaxy emanating from Lord Shiva's jata.

  Astrophotography in India - I   Introduction   “tapasā cīyate brahma tato'nnamabhijāyate |” The above mantra from the Mundaka Upanishad (Verse 1.1.8) has been translated variously by many scholars, but in lay terms it can be read as - the Universe expanded due to the force of Brahma’s ‘ tapas ’ and then came food/matter. It is now understood, that following the Big Bang, matter in its present form was created as the universe cooled down, creating stars and solar systems and other objects that we encounter today. From our vantage point on Earth, the night sky provides a window to the common man to peer back into time and observe the majestic creations that lie strewn across the ever-expanding emptiness of space. Poorna from Poorna

Poorna from Poorna: Is that possible? पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते- declares the second line of one Shanti Mantra 1 . This Shanti Mantra is associated with the Svetasvatara 2 and Isha Upanishads 3 . In English, the mantra translates to: from the poorna (पूर्ण) when when you take out poorna , you are left with poorna . Poorna is a Sanskrit word, which is usually roughly translated as ‘whole’. In the context of the Shanti Mantra, translators 2,3 have interpreted poorna to be a synonym for Brahman (ब्रह्मन्) and the statement to imply that “ Brahman is still full, although the whole universe has come out of it” 2 . Let us take a different route and pretend that we do not know what this statement or the word poorna implies. Instead, we translate the shloka into the following equation: 𝑥-𝑥 = 𝑥, where 𝑥 is this entity to be determined.
